What’s the difference between an orthodontist and a general dentist doing my braces or Invisalign?

Orthodontists are general dentists who went to an additional 2 – 3 years of specialty training to specifically learn how to straighten teeth & correct bites. Dr. Laurent went to Harvard for four years for Dental School and then three additional years at UCSF for orthodontic training.

Some general dentists really enjoy orthodontics and take many additional continuing education classes to learn how to move teeth properly. Others prefer not to do any orthodontics and send all the cases to an orthodontic specialist. Many orthodontists and dentists use the same materials (Invisalign can be used by either, for example) – but the materials depend on the doctor having a good plan and using them properly.

It is important to know that whoever you chose to straighten your teeth has the proper skills and training to move your teeth in a healthy way. In complicated cases, we will definitely work WITH your general dentist to make sure we get the correct final position for your best outcome.
